Celine
Dion: A Singer with a Wild Body?
Analyzing Celine's Body Language On and Off Stage
The other
day VH1 claimed that Mariah Carey has the most gracious diva hand
gestures in showbiz. Nothing of the kind! Look at our beloved
Celine and you'll understand who is the queen of the world in
that department.
But before
jumping into observations and analysis, let's clear the terminology
we are going to use here. What is body language?
Body
language: It's basically the information, feelings and
emotions communicated through the gestures, body positions and
facial expressions of a person. In other words, if you make a
face, it means something :-)
Now, Celine.
One doesn't
have to be a body language expert to notice that Celine's body
language is very rich. Actually, the first folks who picked up
on that were Celine Dion haters. We spoke about haters in the
previous issue of Dream On. Celine's
famous gesture when she would hit herself in the chest with a
fist would exasperate some critics. You know that Celine actually
did it when she sang Titanic at the Oscars? Why does she keep
doing that?
Three reasons:
- First,
this famous gesture is completely out of Celine's control as
it is surely of instinctual and, therefore, unconscious nature
- Second,
I believe that when someone like Celine is singing in a language
other than her native, gestures help deliver the message. Did
you notice for example, that when you are visiting a foreign
country where they speak some other language than your native
you use gestures to substitute for the lack of words? Same here.
Celine is an entertainer, and her gestures, help her establish
a contact with the audience. I'd even suggest that when Celine
is singing in French which is her mother tongue, her facial
expressions and gestures are less expressive than when she sings
in English.
- Third,
it his is now Celine's trademark gesture, and therefore she
can't simply stop doing that :-)
Celine's rich
body language suggests she is a very emotional, sensitive and
a warm person.
But what happens
to Celine's body language when she is off stage? Well, nothing
happens to it. It is all there. For example, did you notice how
many times Celine touches her heart with her left hand? It's the
ultimate "thank-you-from-the-bottom-of-my-heart" type
of thing.
I once witnessed
Celine talking to the journalists during a press conference. The
press conference took place in a conference room of a big hotel,
the room was specially prepared for the event. The table top at
which Celine and Rene were sitting was covered with rose petals.
During the entire press conference Celine was constantly playing
with those rose petals, smelling them, and when I got up to ask
my own question, she threw a bunch of those rose petals my way
after I said she looked absolutely gorgeous. Was Celine nervous?
Probably she was as she never let go of the rose petals. They
kept her occupied. Celine often times feels quite vulnerable during
the encounters with the media.
So what do
we know about Celine from her body language? Not so little in
fact. We know that:
- Celine
is a passionate, warm person
- English
is her second language, and the abundance of hand gestures and
facial expressions help the communication with the audience
- She is
a vulnerable person during her encounters with the media
- She probably
likes hugging too!
I hope that
at some point all fans of Celine will profit from this body language
richness. A hug would be a dream come true for many. Dream on!
