The Skyscraper Dream of Celine Dion

"I kept having the same nightmare. I was on the roof of a very high building - probably in an American city like New York or Chicago. There were a lot of people on the ground watching me and shouting at me not to jump. I wanted them to know that I had absolutely no intention of jumping. But either they didn't hear me or they weren't listening. They seemed panic-stricken and were running left and right. Then I saw thousands of people were entering the building like ants, taking the elevator up to the roof in order to stop or save me. I didn't really know anymore. They got to the roof. They ran toward me, shouting nonstop. They told me to be careful. But this time, I was the one who wasn't listening. I jumped into empty space to escape them. And I fell for a long time, very slowly. I could see the deserted, empty, dark city. No one was left to watch me fall. I tried to cry, but no sound emerged from my mouth. I woke up just before hitting the ground." Celine Dion. My Story. Interpretation

The dream takes us back to 1993. A very eventful year for Celine. She referred to this period as "living in hell". The high building is a symbol of significant achievements. That year Celine sung at President Bill Clinton's inauguration, she had a nonstop sequence of media exposure, trips, concerts, recording sessions, etc. But "high building" is also a symbol of a growing anxiety and fear. That same year Rene got a heart attack, while Celine's American tour required her effort and concentration.

The crowds is an incarnation of an outside world with its never-ending demands. Celine learns the hard way what it feels like to be a celebrity. Little privacy, always on display. Tired of touring, she sometimes could not tell what city she was in. The image of a concert audience turned upside down. Cheers turned into shouts. Celine was not realizing anymore what was going on in her life. One week she does publicity in Europe, with a raging cold she hosts Junos in Toronto, sings at the Grammies in Los Angeles, etc, etc, etc. Celine, 25, was emerged into a life of a star. However, a "petite Quebecoise" inside of her was totally overwhelmed by this transition. And that's the main message of the dream.
