Dream
"Apple
Dream" of Celine Dion
"I
am one of those people who have recurrent dreams, seeing the same
sequence over and over. Almost every night I dreamed I'd swallowed
a big, hard, cold apple that had gotten stuck at the back
of my throat. I'd wake up terrified. Sometimes I'd go for hours
without sleeping because of the sensation of that apple in my
throat. I don't think I'd ever felt so vulnerable and so helpless."

Interpretation
1996.
The Oscars, the Grammies, the French pop-music awards, the Adisq
gala in Canada, the World Music Awards, and finally the Olympics
in Atlanta - these are just some of the fruits of 1996. Celine
recalls that a couple of weeks after the Olympics performance
in Atlanta, she felt she was falling ill. Completely exhausted
after reaching the summit of the musical Olympus, the "p'tite
quebecoise" had no energy to go on.
This
is the time when the recurrent "apple nightmare" appears
for the first time. Deep fatigue and a physical feeling of pain
invaded Celine's sleep. Afraid of the "apple dream",
Celine is anxious about falling asleep and seeing the same nightmare
all over again.
What
can be worse for a vocalist who is guarding her instrument - the voice
- as the most precious thing on earth, than to feel that something
is hurting it? No wonder Celine felt so vulnerable
and so helpless.
But
what is the significance of the apple in the dream. What is the symbolism of it?
Celine
is worried about her voice. The
dream gives a hint that Celine is quite anxious about losing her
voice one day. For her fans the voice of Celine is an apple of
gold - beautiful, powerful, and captivating. For Celine, her voice
is a fruit-bearing tree. The International stardom, her fame and
now her life are the fruits of her voice. And it seems like it
is a very disturbing thought for Celine even to think about losing
it one day to fatigue and exhaustion.
