The Apple Dream of Celine Dion
"I am one of those people who have recurrent dreams, seeing the same sequence over and over. Almost every night I dreamed I'd swallowed a big, hard, cold apple that had gotten stuck at the back of my throat. I'd wake up terrified. Sometimes I'd go for hours without sleeping because of the sensation of that apple in my throat. I don't think I'd ever felt so vulnerable and so helpless." Celine Dion "My Story, My Dream" English edition, 2000, page 243
Interpretation
1996. The Oscars, the Grammies, the French pop-music awards, the Adisq gala in Canada, the World Music Awards, and finally the Olympics in Atlanta - these are just some of the fruits of 1996. Celine recalls that a couple of weeks after the Olympics performance in Atlanta, she felt she was falling ill. Completely exhausted after reaching the summit of the musical Olympus, the "p'tite quebecoise" had no energy to go on.
This is the time when the recurrent "apple" nightmare appears for the first time. Deep fatigue and a physical feeling of pain invaded Celine's sleep. Afraid of the "apple dream", she says she is anxious about falling asleep and seeing the same nightmare all over again. She feels vulnerable and helpless.
Constant pressure and fatigue make resurface Celine's worst fear ever - to one day lose her voice. This is the veritable subject of this dream. Celine's voice is a precious fruit which provided fame and fortune not only for Celine herself, but for her entire Dion clan. It's a very troubling thought of losing it to fatigue and exhaustion. The dream is a warning. The psyche advises to slow down in order to avoid the worst.
